Now retired she is developing Stitch Meditation workshops using stitching as a mindful way of reducing anxiety while enabling participants to share the joy of stitching.

The tranquil surroundings of Old Park Meadow or the quiet community setting of Dunmow Library  are perfect for the opportunity to enjoy the relaxing benefits of Stitch Meditation. Perhaps the activity, specific fabrics or colours may evoke memories which we can share if we wish. There is such richness in all that we have gained from others, especially our grandmothers or key influential women we knew. This is a time for reflection as we stitch and connect with those around us and remember those who went before.

Alternative Yellow Book

We are delighted to now share the film created as part of the Alternative Yellow Book programme. Click here to view the film. It was made by Jevan Watkins Jones with Aura Films. It features interviews older residents of Great Dunmow sharing their recollections of plants and gardens. The film was produced alongside the limited edition art book. Copies of the book are still available to buy. The book has been to beautifully designed by Jevan with Firebrand Creative. It captures Jevan's reflections, encounters and illustrations from his residency in Great Dunmow from October 2015 to February 2016. Copies can be ordered by emailing us at info@highstileprojects.co.uk. Books cost £15 including postage to UK addresses.

"I am contemplating Alternative Yellow Book as if it were a long border in a garden. Seeing it actively, from within it, whilst digging around its roots carefully and as I pass along it. The long border contains its individual plant subjects that en masse become another subject in itself, breathing the same air, defined by its own edges and by my distance from them. And then there is the growing and evolving memory of how the border shapes itself, season after season, year after year. What form does that memory take?"

Jevan Watkins Jones - Opening of Alternative Yellow Book.

These are great food sources for birds and insects to please be tolerant of them.

What I Learnt From My Grandmother

We are keen to encourage intergenerational conversations during lockdown through our project "What I Learnt From My Grandmother". Our aim is to create a new textiles artwork and an online exhibition.

We would love you to share family stories.  What can we learn from our grandmothers, from the pre plastic wrapped times, about how we can lead more sustainable lives? Are there favourite receipes, gardening or useful make do & mend skills we need to relearn? What treasured objects do you have at home that belonged to your grandmother/s? What memories do they hold and how many do you still use?

We would like people to contribute images and stories that can be captured in a square images 20 cm  * 20cm. Please email catherinemummery@highstileprojects.co.uk for more information on how you can take part or click here.

To kick things off please see the images on the right. When we asked our son what he had learnt from his grandmother Pat (Catherine's mother) he said baking. The Constance Spry book belonged to his great grandmother, the Delia Smith was passed down by his grandmother, the Jamie Oliver is one of his favourite cook books. He made the chocolate cheesecake the other week, it is sitting on a plate that belonged to his other great grandmother. We hope our montage will encourage conservations about food and shared meals. What is your favourite food? What food makes you think about your grandmothers?

The  textiles project  is open to everyone who lives, works or studies in Dunmow and its surrounding villages, whether your connection goes back just 5 days or 5 generations. It is also open to anyone whose grandmother has a connection to Dunmow. Anyone outside of Dunmow is also welcome to share memories and images and will add these to an online exhibition.

This project has been devised by Catherine Mummery,  Ellen Jackson & Kelly Lattimore  in partnership with the Great Dunmow Museum, The Maltings & Dunmow Library. It has been supported by a small grant from Dunmow Town Council.

St. Mary's Riverbank Walk Spring Tidy

Please spare us 30  minutes or 1 hour of your time to help make a difference. Saturday 14 March 10am - 12pm, St. Mary's Church Riverbank Walk CM6 2AE

St. Mary's Riverbank Walk  was created so that it can be used  by local community groups as an outdoor creative learning space and as peaceful place for all.  It now  needs some TLC.  Help us give it a tidy up and join us for a tasty roll, slice of cake and tea & coffee.

Daffoldils planted by local schools and groups are out now and look wonderful.  The paths leading down to the Riverbank Walk were made so that they are accessible for wheel chair users and parents with buggies. Mud and grass is now encroaching on them  and so they need clearing.  This will again allow all ages and abilities to more easily enjoy the spring displays.

Please come prepared in sensible gardening clothes and strong gardening gloves. Please bring with you spades and shovels. For more information contact Catherine Mummery catherinemummery@highstileprojects.co.uk

    • What happens to your library at night? Imagine what would happen if the characters from your favourite books came to life?
    • How would you make your library into a Fun Palace. Would it have climbing walls, a swimming pool for books, flying book shelves?
Draw, paint, collage or write your ideas within your pictures.
Competition Deadline 5pm Saturday 26 January 2019.

Make your own model library

We believe our libraries are vital community spaces, housed in a rich variety of building.  Artist Tom Downing has created nets of 8 libraries in Harlow & Uttlesford to encourage us all to have fun in making our own model libraries.
You can click on the name of the library and download a template of your library of choice.

We would love to display your creations in the libraries so please bring your creation to one of the participating libraries or email us a photo of your artwork to info@highstileprojects.co.uk. This is opportunity is open to all ages, we would love adults to have a go. Younger children will need some help with making the models. We would love to see some family entries. If you would like our library to go on display as part of the Invitation to Play project please complete it by Saturday 2 February 2019.

If we don't use our libraries more they will close

Why not call into your local library and look at it with fresh eyes?

The nets Tom Downing has created encourage us to think more about their architecture and history. You can use  your own imagination on how you would like to redecorate them or to think about what new and exciting events could take place in them.
